Honor Health Desert Mission Food Bank

On  Thursday, November 3rd  a group of  17 AHE Volunteers spent time at the Honor Health Desert Mission Food Bank to help provide emergency food assistance for the hungry and support children, families and senior citizens in urgent need of food security.

The Desert Mission Food Bank provides emergency food assistance to help families move out of crisis and into self-sufficiency where they can provide meals for themselves.  The food bank—which is actually designed in a market format so that clients shop as they would in a regular grocery store—offers nonperishable and perishable food, and educates clients about nutrition and healthy ways to prepare it.  Through a variety of programs, and with the help of generous donors and volunteers, the Food Bank truly nourishes the surrounding community.

Currently, nearly 1 in 5 Arizonans and 1 in 3 children in Arizona live in poverty.  Recent data show that Arizona’s hunger rates are indeed higher than national averages:

·         17.8% of Arizonans are food insecure, compared to 15.9%, nationally.

·         28.2% of Arizona children face hunger, compared to 21.6%, nationally.

·         Arizona ranks 3rd in the country for high child food insecurity rates, behind New Mexico and Mississippi, with  456,760 children facing hunger on a daily basis.
