Every one of us has been touched by dementia. We’ve watched it impact not just those with the disease—whether it be a grandparent, parent, spouse or friend—but also those who care for that loved one.
What many don’t realize is that dementia is already the fourth leading cause of death in Arizona—and numbers are projected to increase sharply over the next decade. We, individually and collectively, need to prepare for our current and future patients by cultivating a new workforce of dementia care experts.
To meet these needs, Hospice of the Valley, a long established leader in dementia care and education, has created a Dementia Care Fellowship Program. This fellowship will provide targeted education, opportunities to creatively collaborate and resources to enable the Fellows to develop a program within their organizations. We encourage applications to this new Dementia Care Fellowship Program with the goal of enhancing expertise in this field and improving quality of life for patients, families and our communities.
Up to twelve people from a variety of fields will be selected for the year-long fellowship starting January 2018. Candidates may come from any discipline or role within the healthcare continuum-from primary care to post-acute care and care facilities. We welcome nurses, social workers, administrators, teachers, therapists, artists, musicians. We seek individuals passionate about contributing to their organization, profession or community through the fellowship and beyond. Ideal candidates are creative thinkers committed to developing and implementing a project that will improve or change dementia care in their agency. A stipend of $10,000 will be awarded ($5,000 to the Fellow and $5,000 to the Fellow’s organization) to cover support, training, materials, conference fees, etc. The time commitment would be two initial days, one day at six months and one day at 12 months, along with monthly virtual phone calls.
Fellows will be awarded a certificate of completion identifying them as a Fellow in Dementia Care. Opportunities to present their project and associated outcomes will be ongoing.
This program is a chance to create and innovate the next generation of dementia caregivers and to develop skills to improve care for persons with dementia and their families. We encourage you to apply!
